Music school students fill center with music

Reprinted from the The Sunday Citizen, Sunday, December 18, 2005 written by VIctoria Guay, staff writer.

MOULTONBOROUGH - The sights and sounds of the holidays filled the Geneva Point Convention Center's Meeting House on Saturday.

The sounds were provided by the students of the New Hampshire Independent School of Music, a new, nonprofit organization started last year to enhance musical education in the community.

Noelle Beaudin, co-founder of the school and a piano teacher from Center Harbor, said she and other area musicians realized that there is a real deficit of learning and performing opportunities.

Saturday's concert highlighted student's achievement in string and wind instruments, piano and vocal ability.

Holiday crafts, refreshments and a hayride added to the seasonal feel of the event.

Beaudin said the school has regular semesters during the fall and spring and hosts summer music camp.

Teachers are also collaborating with area schools to boost instruction in string instruments.

"One of our goals is to develop a youth symphony orchestra in the Lakes Region," Beaudin said.

Adults are also welcome to take classes or to contact other musicians and schedule times to play music.

"Every community needs an organization to facilitate musicians coming together to play," Beaudin said. "Otherwise they remain isolated."

Gerry Bennett, a parent of three boys, two of whom performed on Saturday, said she is appreciative of the opportunity the school has given her children.

Her eldest son, Nathan Bennett, 11, plays the saxophone and piano.

"I like the improvisation you can do on the piano," Nathan said, when asked why he likes the instrument. He added that his father got him interested in the piano by suggesting lessons.

Nathan's younger brother, Nicky Bennett, 10, plays the trombone and the piano.

"I like when you get the audience to clap for you," Nicky said.
